Business is serious. Healthcare is serious. Law and accounting are serious. All work is serious.
It is sad when dedication to our profession becomes a disease. When colleagues no longer can incorporate any fun into their endeavors. How many times have we heard team members rationalize their long hours by saying that they are not worthy of play? They quip, “having fun is for the immature and lazy.” The other common rationale for not having fun is that it is a waste of time and productivity.
Our human lives need balance. One should never deny the need to have fun. A person can never be a well-integrated and sustainable contributor to their organization without time for some fun.
Emma Goldman was a political activist and anarchist who wrote and gave countless speeches. In the early 1900’s she became a renowned lecturer on anarchy, women’s rights, and social issues attracting crowds of thousands.
Despite all of her efforts, she still wanted some time “to dance.”
“People rarely succeed unless they are having fun in what in what they are doing,” said Dale Carnegie, the famous writer on self-development and salesmanship.
With fun comes laughter. Laughter is healthy. Marlo Thomas sums up the need for laughter by saying, “Laughter is important, not only because it makes us happy, it also actually has health benefits. And that is because laughter completely engages the body and releases the mind. It connects us to others, and that in itself has a healing effect.”
Schedule some time into each day to have fun. Walk away from work for awhile. Go to a concert, a ball game, read a good novel, enjoy a relaxing dinner, or spend some time on a rewarding and fulfilling hobby. Leave the work behind. Be assured, the work will still be there when you come back.
